Abstract
This study is an attempt to investigate the market structure, sources of milk production and average unit of productivity in peri-urban areas of Lahore. Using primary data of year 2007 from some selected peri-urban areas of Lahore, the results of this study reveal that the lack of training and dairy related education hinders opportunity of value addition with undue cost of poor transportation, low quality and mismanaged distribution. Lack of marketing and supply chain in dairy industry is another bottleneck of development. The results of this study call for the role of government in the development of dairy sector. The government needs to provide critical support for the promotion of smallholder producers in peri-urban areas.
